11^TH ZAMBIA WATER FORUM AND EXHIBITION

The 12th Zambia Water Forum and Exhibition was held under the theme “Closing the Gap: Working towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets”.

ZAWAFE will bring together various experts, institutions and stakeholders from within Zambia, the SADC region and the broader international community to share knowledge, exchange ideas and network with regards to water resources management and development.

Water Investments to Support Economic Transformation

Water Investments for productive use and economic growth (water investments for: tourism, mining, energy, food security, transport and logistics); and

Enhance Water Resources Management (transboundary water cooperation and benefits sharing; Water Resources Planning; Water Transfers for Economic Production (e.g. to make water available to mitigate the low water levels in Lake Kariba for power generation, 2022/23 experience); and

Groundwater planning, development, implementation and management.

Enhancing Resilience Through Water

Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation for Community Resilience (Urban Water Supply and Sanitation; Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (e.g. to avoid Vubwi Cholera, 2023 experience);

Building Climate Resilience (Augmenting Water Resources, Long Term Adaptation planning for Water, Climate Change Mitigation, Climate Proofing Water Infrastructure (e.g. to deal with non-resilient water swept-off bridges, 2023 experience), Water Related Hazards);

Enhancing Environmental Sustainability (Promoting nature based solutions, Strengthening Water Information Systems for the environmental, flood control (e.g. to mitigate the Mazabuka floods, 2023 experience) and economic accounting of water, Integrated Catchment Management); and

Gender and Social Inclusion (Gender Equality in Water Security and Climate Resilience Building, Youth Development and Empowerment through Water Security and Sanitation Investments, Child Development through Water and Sanitation, Social Inclusion Programmes for People Living with Disabilities related to Water and Sanitation).

Water and Sanitation Governance and Institutional Strengthening

Human and Institutional Capacity Building (Human and Institutional Capacity Building for Water Resources Development, and Water Supply and Sanitation, Capacity Building for Water Sector Institutions, Formulation and Implementation of a Water Research and Development Programme);

Financing Water Investments and Resources Mobilization (Water Investment Scorecard, Resource Mobilization Strategy, and Project Preparation and Proposal Development); and

Strengthening of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) and International Cooperation (Enabling Environment for Viable PPPs on Economic and Multipurpose Water and Sanitation Investments, Promotion of the Cooperative and Small-Medium-Enterprise (SME) approach to multi-purpose water and sanitation investments), Capacity Building for Private Sector Led Water Investments).

Application of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus in the Zambian Context

Trade-offs and synergies between hydropower generation and food production;

Water Energy Food and Environment (WEFE) Nexus assessments and best practices; and

Climate proofing hydropower generation systems.

ZAWAFE is open to practitioners in water, sanitation and hygiene sector, health sector, local government and housing, experts of the environment, energy experts, climate change experts, academicians and researchers, planning and development practitioners, policy makers, cooperating partners, non-governmental organizations, civil societies, financial and Investment experts and the general public.

Call For Exhibitions

We invite institutions and companies in the Water, Sanitation and related sectors to exhibit their products and services at this event in order to reach out to the Zambian populace on what they can offer in the sustainable management of water, sanitation and hygiene in Zambia. This year offers an opportunity for institutions to showcase their investment and other support they are offering the sector. For example, how does this investment compliment or arise from the Water Investment Programme launched by President Hakainde Hichilema in July 2022. You are therefore encouraged to attend. The deadline for registration for Exhibition is May 22^nd, 2023.

Registration

All participants and exhibitors to ZAWAFE will be expected to register to attend sessions. Participants and exhibitors can register ahead of ZAWAFE by downloading registration forms from the Downloads page of our Website. A non-refundable registration fee will be charged per participant/ exhibitor upon registration. Participants are encouraged to undertake field trips (see field trip sites below) that have been planned during ZAWAFE. All participants interested in going on field trips must register in advance and registration fees will be charged per participant.

Field Trips

Various field trips will be held WITHIN the ZAWAFE Period (12^th-14 June, 2023). These include:

- Visit to a commercial farm using integrated water systems;
- Lusaka Sanitation Programme (LSP) Faecal Sludge Management, new Chunga Treatment Plant; and
- Lusaka Water and Sanitation Company new Iolanda Water Treatment Plant in Kafue.

Post ZAWAFE field trips:

- To Lake Kariba Dam for Energy-Water Nexus (June 15, 2023); and
- To Victoria Falls, Livingstone for Energy-Tourism-Water-Environment Nexus (June 15^th 2023).
